Solid Ground, UCR School of Medicine, and the UC Graduate and Professional Council have joined forces to offer mental health educational workshops for graduate and professional students, healthcare providers, administrators, researchers, and community members. These workshops aim to shed light on various mental health issues students face in academic environments, identify the barriers to mental health service use, and provide tools and strategies to protect and improve mental health and emotional well-being.

The first workshop, “Structural Factors and Mental Health Disparities,” will take place on April 25, 2023, from 3.00-4.30 PM. This workshop will explore how the academic environment and social and structural factors contribute to mental health service use barriers among historically marginalized graduate and professional students. The workshop will feature findings from the Photovoice and Healing the Academy projects.

The second workshop, “Setting Limits and Boundaries,” will take place on May 08, 2023, from 3.00-4.30 PM. This workshop will focus on how to protect mental health and well-being and recognize personal needs and limitations. Participants will learn how to identify unmet mental health needs in graduate school and create measurable and actionable steps to improve their mental health.

The third workshop, “Building Community through Stories,” will occur on May 22, 2023, from 3.00-4.30 PM. In this workshop, participants will hear personal narratives and testimonials of situations in the academy that negatively affect the mental health and emotional well-being of graduate students. Participants will also learn about stories of the struggle of graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and academic career counselors.

These workshops provide a unique opportunity for participants to engage in small and large group activities, learn from experts in the field of mental health, and share their experiences and perspectives with fellow participants.
