February promises busy action for UCGPC! This month, graduate and professional student leaders are engaging in critical discussions and activities aimed at improving the UC experience for all.

Engaging the UC President: On February 16th, UCGPC Board Directors will hold a pivotal meeting with UC President Michael V. Drake. The agenda focuses on three crucial areas:

  • UC-HBCU Initiative: Exploring opportunities for deeper collaboration between the UC system and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
  • Progress and Next Steps for the Opportunity for All Campaign: Discussing advancements and future plans for ensuring accessibility and equity within the UC system.
  • UC’s Political “Neutrality” Agenda: Addressing concerns surrounding political expression and engagement within the UC community.

These topics directly align with UCGPC’s core values of equity, diversity, social justice, and civic engagement, as well as their ongoing priorities related to mentorship standards.

Advocating for Student Needs: February 20th marks the highly anticipated Sacramento Advocacy Day. UCGPC delegates will travel to the state capitol to meet with legislators and raise awareness about key issues impacting graduate and professional students. They will advocate for increased funding for essential areas like campus housing, mental health resources, and support for student parents. This direct engagement aims to secure vital resources and policies that directly benefit UC students.

Joining the National Conversation: On February 21st and 22nd, UCGPC, at the invitation of the UC Office of the President, will send delegates to the California Higher Education Basic Needs Alliance (CHEBNA) Conference. This gathering brings together experts from across the higher education landscape to address the crucial topic of student basic needs security. UCGPC delegates will have the opportunity to learn from and contribute to best practices aimed at fostering the well-being of all students within the California higher education system.
