The University of California Graduate and Professional Council (UCGPC) recently held its annual officer elections, selecting a new leadership team to represent the interests of over 60,000 graduate and professional students across the UC system. After a thorough interview process, the council voted to appoint Ryan Manriquez as the re-elected UCGPC President, Naomi Hammonds as the new Council Chair, and Mohit Saraswat as the re-elected Treasurer.

The selection of these individuals reflects the council’s commitment to strong leadership, effective advocacy, and financial responsibility. Ryan Manriquez, a second-year Master of Public Policy student at UC Berkeley, brings a wealth of experience in student government and policy advocacy. His vision for the upcoming year focuses on addressing critical issues like campus climate, student housing, and funding for graduate research and fellowships.

Naomi Hammonds, a recent UCLA graduate and incoming Master of Public Health student, impressed the council with her proven track record of leading large student organizations and her ability to foster inclusive and collaborative environments. As Council Chair, she will be responsible for facilitating productive discussions and ensuring that all members of the UCGPC feel heard and valued.

Mohit Saraswat, a fourth-year PhD candidate at UC Merced, will continue in his role as Treasurer, leveraging his expertise in financial management and risk mitigation to ensure the UCGPC’s fiscal stability. Mohit’s commitment to diversifying the organization’s funding streams and exploring creative solutions to address the ongoing budget challenges faced by graduate students will be crucial in the year ahead.

The selection of these officers comes at a critical time for the UC system, as graduate and professional students navigate the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, rising costs of living, and the need for increased support and resources. The UCGPC, under the leadership of Ryan, Naomi, and Mohit, is poised to be a powerful voice in advocating for the needs and concerns of this vital student population.

As the new academic year approaches, the UCGPC community can look forward to a future filled with bold advocacy, innovative solutions, and a steadfast commitment to the success and well-being of graduate and professional students across the University of California.
