This month’s report covers a variety of updates from across the UC system, including student activism, resource allocation, housing concerns, and new system-wide initiatives.

Student Activism:

  • UC Davis: The UAW strike continues, but with lower participation. Concerns remain about the city’s recent re-approval of “military equipment” and its potential use on student encampments. The General Assembly voiced support for the encampment, and efforts are underway to oppose legislation seen as targeting student activism (HR6090 and HR7921).
  • UC Irvine: Lobbying efforts continued in D.C., while student casework focused on student affairs processes and the aftermath of the campus encampment and police response.

Resource Allocation:

  • UC Davis: A request for an FTE (full-time employee) for student-parent resources faced pushback due to perceived redundancy within existing staff.

Housing:

  • UC Riverside: Newly elected student leaders face a significant housing waitlist (1400 students) with international students and graduate students being prioritized. Offers will go out in late August/early September. Construction of North District 2 is on track for a Fall 2025 opening, with at least 200 beds reserved for graduate students.

System-Wide Initiatives:

  • A new coalition of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) representatives from across campuses is being formed to identify common concerns and develop collaborative solutions.
  • Policy development is underway to address the increased use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by students and establish expectations and consequences for its misuse in academic work.

Other Updates:

  • An encampment was reported at UCSF in early May (details not provided).

Please note: This report is based on information available as of June 2024.
