Katia Hatem Ph.D. Candidate in Chemistry at UC Riverside
Atmospheric Chemist | Advocate | Connector Across Campuses
Meet Katia Hatem (She/Her), a third-year Ph.D. student in the Chemistry Department at UC Riverside and a passionate advocate serving on the 2025 University of California Graduate and Professional Council (UCGPC). With a scientific mind rooted in environmental health and a heart for student community-building, Katia is helping lead the way toward a more collaborative and informed graduate student experience across the UC system.
Cleaner Air for a Healthier Future
Katia’s research in atmospheric chemistry in Dr. Jingsong Zhang’s laboratory focuses on ozonolysis reactions of alkenes that produce Criegee Intermediates. These reactions play a critical role in the formation of hydroxyl (OH) radicals—powerful oxidants that influence air quality, pollutant breakdown, and climate dynamics.
“This research is vital for protecting the health of our planet and its inhabitants,” Katia explains. “By unraveling how Criegee Intermediates influence the formation of OH radicals in the atmosphere, we gain key insights into the chemical processes that drive air pollution and climate change. These insights could help reduce harmful pollutants, slow global warming, and improve air quality—ultimately safeguarding human health and the environment for future generations.”
Building Bridges Between Campuses
Katia’s commitment to science is matched by her dedication to student advocacy and leadership. She previously served as President of the Chemistry Graduate Student Association (GSA) at UC Riverside, where she coordinated a range of community-focused events—including social gatherings like ice cream socials—to foster connection and wellbeing among graduate students.
Now, as a UCGPC Council Member, Katia is focused on strengthening collaboration across all UC campuses. She hopes to spotlight the important work being done by student organizations throughout the system and to create more opportunities for inter-campus partnerships and advocacy alignment.
“There are so many incredible organizations and efforts across the UC system. By increasing visibility and collaboration, we can elevate our collective impact and make sure every graduate and professional student feels represented and supported.”
