Student Advocate to the Regents (StAR) spotlight highlights Saleshia Ellis, a 1L JD student at UC Davis. Selected for her focus on mentorship standards, which aligns perfectly with UCGPC’s priority agenda for student success.

During the meeting, Saleshia discussed the importance of mentorship in fostering academic and professional growth with Vice Provost Douglas Haynes. She also shared her inspiring story and educational journey with Student Regents Merhawi Tesfai and Josiah Beharry.
Why Mentorship Matters
Saleshia emphasized the crucial role mentorship plays, particularly for underrepresented groups in demanding fields like law. Strong mentorship programs equip students with valuable guidance. They provide career advice and a supportive network. These are all factors that contribute to student success.
Promoting a Robust Mentorship Program
Saleshia advocates for a policy change to establish a robust mentorship program across the UC system. This program would incentivize students to seek mentors, integrate mentorship milestones into the curriculum, and create residential mentorship communities. Additionally, training mentors in mental health first aid would ensure they provide comprehensive support.
By advocating for effective mentorship programs, Saleshia hopes to empower students to thrive in their academic and professional journeys.
