The University of California’s Board of Regents makes decisions that shape the future of every student, faculty member, and campus community. As a graduate or professional student, you have a unique opportunity to bring your voice directly to these conversations by serving as a Student Observer on one of the Regents’ Standing Committees for the 2025-2026 academic year.
Why Serve as a Student Observer?
- Direct Access to Decision-Makers: Address Regents and senior UC leaders on key issues that impact students systemwide.
- Professional Growth: Develop public speaking, policy analysis, and advocacy skills—essential for academic, policy, and leadership careers.
- Networking: Collaborate with UC Student Association (UCSA), the UC Graduate and Professional Council (UCGPC), and other student leaders.
- Travel Support: UCOP Student Affairs reimburses travel expenses for in-person meetings, ensuring equitable access for all selected Observers.
What Does a Student Observer Do?
- Address open session agenda items before the Standing Committee (up to five minutes per item).
- Engage with committee members at the presenter’s table during your item.
- Coordinate with Student Affairs and Regents’ staff to ensure smooth participation.
- Represent graduate and professional student perspectives with professionalism and respect for confidential discussions.
Who Should Apply?
- Current graduate or professional students at any UC campus, in good academic and disciplinary standing.
- Students who can attend all committee meetings (in-person or virtual) and participate in related conference calls.
- Those passionate about higher education policy, advocacy, and making a tangible impact on the UC system.
