Who is Amalia?

Amalia Mejia (she/her) is a Ph.D. Candidate in the department of Urban Planning and Public Policy at UC Irvine. She was born and raised in Santa Ana, CA. Her work focuses on the community supervision of Latinos. She earned a Masters of Public Policy at Pepperdine University and a Bachelors in Political Science and Sociology from UC Santa Barbara. Amalia has direct experience applying research to policymaking and a deep understanding of the communities these policies intend to support.

What are her advocacy and interests?

Amalia is deeply invested in reshaping various aspects of student welfare, with a particular focus on redefining safety, basic needs, affordable housing, and mental health support. She seeks to broaden the understanding of safety beyond traditional notions, advocating for comprehensive measures that encompass not only physical security but also emotional and psychological well-being within academic environments. Furthermore, Amalia is dedicated to addressing the fundamental needs of students by advocating for increased access to affordable housing options and essential resources, such as food security and healthcare. Recognizing the importance of mental health in overall student success, she is committed to promoting initiatives that prioritize mental wellness and provide accessible support services for all students. Through her advocacy efforts, Amalia strives to foster a campus community that prioritizes the holistic well-being of its members and ensures equitable access to resources necessary for academic and personal flourishing.
