Dear Chancellor Frenk and EVC Hunt,
I am writing to you as (ADD WHO YOU ARE: e.g. a member of the UCLA or Los Angeles community, an ECE parent, a faculty member, etc.) to urge UCLA to pause the planned closure of its Early Care and Education Program (ECE) and the end of the University Parents Nursery School (UPNS) lease.
These programs serve more than 300 families at a time when Los Angeles is already facing a severe shortage of childcare. Eliminating these spaces will put additional pressure on an already overwhelmed childcare system and make it harder for parents to work, study, teach, conduct research, and care for their patients at the UCLA medical center.
(ADD A PERSONAL ANECDOTE)
While UCLA is facing significant financial pressures, eliminating childcare capacity is not the answer. Other leading universities, including the other UC campuses are investing in childcare because they recognize its importance to their communities and institutions. Childcare is a basic need and an essential infrastructure. It is also essential to UCLA’s mission. Reliable childcare helps UCLA recruit and retain faculty, staff, students, researchers, and healthcare workers.
I respectfully ask UCLA leadership to pause these closures, engage meaningfully with affected families and employees, and identify a sustainable way to preserve childcare on campus.
Sincerely,
(ADD NAME)
